The Business Women’s Association (BWA) Foundation has awarded Mercy Foundation a $5,000 grant to support Mercy Medical Center – West Lakes Mother/Baby unit’s Volunteer Birth Doula Program. A doula partners with the laboring mother’s birth team – providing physical, emotional and educational support during labor and delivery. Doula-assisted births have been found to have a positive impact on the health of both the mother and baby.
“The BWA Foundation is excited to have the opportunity to partner with Mercy’s Volunteer Doula Program. Women supporting the other women are such a key part of our mission. It is an honor to be able to fund training for new volunteers who play such a vital role in the well-being of a new mother and her child,” stated Hilary Wright, BWA board president.
BWA Foundation support will be used to fund training and certification costs for eight qualified volunteers and to purchase needed supplies for the program. “We are extremely grateful we are able to extend our doula services to more women living in our community because of the BWA Foundation’s generous support,” said Sharon Dekock, volunteer birth doula coordinator.
