Mercy College of Health Sciences (Mercy College) has announced through the generosity of donors, it will distribute more than $490,000 in scholarship dollars in the 2015-16 school year. The College awarded $285,865 in charitable scholarship support in the 2014-15 school year; the 2015-16 distributions are a 41.7% increase.
“We have been blessed with charitable gifts from many donors during the year who have made it possible to provide this increased financial assistance for our students. We thank them for their ongoing support and generous contributions.” – Mercy College President Barbara Decker
Mercy Foundation stewarded over 400 donors, January-December 2014, to increase donations to the College and grow its donor base. Art of Life, an annual event hosted by the Foundation, benefited Mercy College scholarships in 2014 and alone brought in over $63,000.
The Gill family, pictured, established the Joan S. Gill Scholarship Fund to honor Joan Gill’s passion for nursing excellence. Joan attended the College as a nontraditional student, graduating in 1994. She worked as a nurse on Mercy’s Mother/Baby unit until she passed away in 2008. Through this fund, other nontraditional students are given the opportunity to realize their dreams of becoming a nurse.
“The Joan S. Gill Nursing Scholarship is giving me the opportunity to further my education and strive for excellence as I serve others. For this, I am endlessly thankful.” – Tracy, Gill Scholarship recipient
Mercy Foundation also worked closely with Georgia Frances Weieneth (Shiltz), a Mercy College School of Nursing graduate of 1945, to honor her work and life through an endowed scholarship. The John F. & G. Frances Weieneth Nursing Scholarship provides multiple, full-tuition awards each year to students with a cumulative GPA above 3.0 with preference given to those demonstrating financial need.
The Gills and the Weieneths are just two examples of the many extraordinary donors Mercy Foundation works with every year who give back to the community and invest in the future of health care.
