Mercy Foundation Receives $290,000 in Grants from Variety – the Children’s Charity to Enhance Care and Services to Children

Mercy Children’s Hospital & Clinics Receives $280,000 Grant; House of Mercy Receives $10,000 Grant for Family Lounge

DES MOINES, Iowa­ – Mercy Foundation has received $290,000 in grants from Variety – the Children’s Charity to enhance care and services to children at Mercy Medical Center.

$280,000 is designated to Mercy Children’s Hospital & Clinics to fund Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Carestation beds, pediatric vision screeners and transcutaneous bilirubin meters. $10,000 is designated to the House of Mercy to create a family lounge.

Mercy Children’s Hospital & Clinics and the House of Mercy are part of Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines, a nonprofit Catholic health care provider serving Greater Des Moines with exceptional care for thousands annually.

The Variety grant will be used to purchase the following:

  • NICU Carestation beds that address the changing and complex demands of fragile infants.
  • Pediatric vision screeners that perform enhanced vision screenings for pre-verbal children and infants.
  • Transcutaneous Bilirubin Meters that easily evaluate infants for jaundice without the need for blood draws.

“This generous grant from Variety – the Children’s Charity will help Mercy Children’s Hospital and Clinics perform the important work of providing the Remarkable Mercy Experience to some of our most vulnerable patients,” said Jody Timmins, Mercy Children’s Hospital & Clinics Service Line Director.

“This important grant will provide a space where our clients can further nurture their family in a supportive environment that includes other essential services like substance use disorder treatment, housing, meals, transportation, licensed childcare, therapy, psychiatric services and more,” said House of Mercy Director Rebecca Peterson.
