MercyOne Children’s Hospital has received a $200,000 grant from Variety- the Children’s Charity to fund significant medical equipment for the pediatric cardiac care program at MercyOne Children’s Hospital.

MercyOne Children’s Hospital is a part of MercyOne Medical Center Des Moines, a nonprofit Catholic health care provider serving Greater Des Moines with remarkable care for thousands annually.

The Variety grant will fund essential equipment for the pediatric cardiac care program, including a new heart-lung machine utilized in cardiac surgeries. MercyOne has Central Iowa’s only comprehensive program that specializes in heart disease in infants, children and adolescents. An on-site pediatric cardiac program has been essential to serving children with cardiac conditions, including those in the Variety pediatric inpatient and intensive care units, along with infants in the Variety neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The new equipment will directly benefit hundreds of Iowa’s sickest children.

“We are so pleased to partner with Variety and are grateful for their generosity to our MercyOne family,” said Shannon Cofield, President of Mercy Foundation.

“The organization’s enduring legacy of serving the most urgent needs of kids in our community is outstanding, and we are appreciative of the lifesaving care this new equipment will provide.”

“This heart-lung machine is equipped with the most up-to-date technology and allows us to stay on the cutting edge of heart surgery for newborns, infants and children,” said David Hockmuth, M.D., Iowa’s only board-certified congenital heart surgeon (pediatric and adult) and the state’s longest-practicing pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, with 28 years of service at MercyOne Des Moines and Iowa Heart Center.

“The addition of this machine to our existing equipment allows for instantaneous response time for children requiring immediate support in cases of cardiac arrest or instability.”
